The word " toplessness " means the state of partial female nudity in which a woman or postpubescent girl has her tits uncovered, with her areolae and nipples visible. The adjective " topless " can refer to a woman who appears, poses, or performs with her breastsso exposed (a " topless model"); to an activity or performance that involves exposing the teats (a " topless dance"); to a graphic, photographic, or filmic depiction of a woman with her tits uncovered (a " topless portrait"); to a place where female toplessness is tolerated or expected
(a " topless beach"); or to a garment designed to reveal the breasts (a " topless swimsuit").

Many indigenous, non-Western cultures, such as those found in parts of Africa and the South Pacific, dealcount it normal and natural for both males and females to be without clothing on their torsos. Because going "topless" can imply sexual licentiousness or deliberate defiance of cultural taboos, the term should not be applied to women in societies where breast exposure is normative. The adjective "topfree" may be preferred to avoid unwanted sexual connotations.

Either through legal statute or through established cultural precedent, many societies exempt some public zones from general prohibitions on female toplessness. One excellent example is the topless beach, which can also be named a top-optional beach (to clarify that ladies are free to choose whether or not to show their breasts) or a topfree beach (to disassociate the act of bare-breasted sunbathing or swimming from sexual connotation). Although they are found in many liberal parts of the world, topless beaches are especially common in Europe and Australia, where they are mostly uncontroversial. E.g., a mid-1990s survey of male and woman Australian university students found that 88 % of respondents considered it socially acceptable for women to walk topless
on public beaches, although the great majority disapproved of female toplessness in other contexts (Herold, Corbesi, & Collins, 1994; 1995). A topless beach differs from a nude beach or naturist beach in that beachgoers of both sexes will keep their private parts strictly covered. Women who sunbathe topless do not necessarily consider themselves to be nudists.
Other places where female toplessness is tolerated or expected can include the Finnish sauna and carnivals such as New Orleans Mardi Gras.

However "topfreedom" is different
Topfreedom is a social movement to accord females the right to be topless in public where boys have that right. Examples of public spaces at which topfreedom may be exercised include beaches, swimming pools and parks. The reasons include keeping nursing mommies from having to hide for breastfeeding, sun tanning, comfort, and sex equality.

Topfree Equal Rights Association (TERA)
The Topfree Equal Rights Association is a Canadian organization to help out ladies who posses legal troubles exercising their rights to walk 'topfree' where mencan. Their Web page puts forward that they serve both Canada and the United States.
The organization also aims to inform and educate the people about topfreedom. They campaign to change laws against topfreedom which exist in most North American jurisdictions, which laws they see as sex discrimination and inhibiting to breastfeeding.

Cultural arguments
Western culture on the whole wants to oppose public woman toplessness on account of the idea that their breasts are sexual areas, and that's why indecent. Opposing, the male chest is not commonly considered to be sexual.
Biologically there is no particular connection between mammary glands and copulation, but boobs have conventionally been regarded by many cultures as sexually arousing, and some zoologists (notably serena williams topless ) believe that through human evolution, female breasts have acquired secondary sexual characteristics as a counterpart of the buttocks in other primates. Some courts in North America have ruled that mammary glands are nurturing organs, not sexual organs, a relevant distinction in light of laws in certain jurisdictions that specifically restrict the public display of sexual organs.
