Description of the Campaigns Component

This component is closely related to the Information and Participation Component. The campaigns should really follow on from the feedback from the general public on the State of the Environment Report for Donetsk.

Activities of the component:

1. Research into Public and Business attitudes towards the environment and getting involved in campaigns.

To carry out social surveys in partnership with DIAC to identify understanding of the environmental problems of Donetsk, finding out concrete directions for training, campaigns.

2. Development of a number of training courses in developing campaigns.

The Working Team will develop a number of training courses that builds on the training provided by DEAP. Training will be provided for NGOs, community groups and business on how to run campaigns, fund raising, advocacy and other key themes. The training will target those groups who are going to take in and develop Campaigns during the project.

3. To run two campaigns of relevance to business and Industry

The two campaigns should target the main polluting industries in Donetsk.
The main thrust of the campaign should be tro raise the businesses awareness of:

  • The improvements they can make;
  • The fact that their activities are having a negative impact on people's health as well as the environment;
  • Their legal responsibilities;
  • Working in close relation with the community;
  • The fact that long-term economic performance is tied up with environmental performance.

It is a positive sign that a number of industries are beginning this process.
One campaign should take place in Year 2 and Year 3.

4. Community Campaigns.

The Working Team will have to run 2 more Community based campaigns - based on the Fresh air and Green Yards models - targeting issues of community concern where people can actually do something to improve the situation and succeed! The Community Campaigns should be linked to the work of Environmental Education and Information and Participation components.

5. To establish Industry Community Forums

As part of the campaigns above, the project should establish a number of Industry/Community Forums where members of the General Public can meet with Industry representatives to discuss issues of concern.

6. Small Grants Scheme.

The Working Team will manage a small grants scheme for community groups. The purpose is to provide small sums of money to community groups to help them improve some aspects of their environment, in a very practical way.
It is envisaged that the community groups will be identified during other activities in the project.

7. Sustainable City Committee.

SCC is formed from the representatives of local authorities, big business, which will develop strategic areas of city development, and support the project.

8. Business Environment Association.

Rosa Vetrov project has put forward the initiative to establish the BEA. At the moment the feasibility study is being held on the issue.
Association will unite business people from all the sectors, which will design a code of activity (including ethical code) to protect the environment, to lobby the promotion of the corresponding acts in local authorities, etc.
