Environmental Education Component
of Rosa Vetrov project

The aim of the Environmental Education direction is forming of active civil behaviour of students, rising of the level of their awareness on the environmental issues and helping them to see the links between economics, society and environment. This direction includes development of the pack of materials for teachers, conducting the competition between schools of Donetsk for the children in the age of 8-12 on the topic "Energy and Energy saving", running of the one-day training for teachers, establishing links between schools and enterprises.

The packet of materials for teachers will be developed in the framework of eco-project for schools. It will include various activities on the Energy topic, with help of which students can come to know what is Energy, its sources and types, ways of its usage and saving, alternative sources and other information.

We recommend to run suggested activities in the interactive way (like games, discussions, ice-breakers, energisers, role plays and so on), so that students will be interested to participate. These materials will be from one side manual for teachers and from the other side will inform students about energy usage in Donetsk and develop their critical thinking. Also they will stimulate not only the work of teacher and students but work of parents and students as well.

The purpose of the one-day training for teachers will be presenting the materials to them and giving the idea of how to use them in the framework of running the Energy project in schools. Beside that on the training interactive techniques will be introduced which can be used by teachers on the lessons and after lessons activities. The rules of the project and criteria of judgement will be given in details.

Development of links between school and business also will be carried in the framework of eco-project for schools. In other words establishing this links will be one of the challenges of the project. This connection could be set through the visit to the enterprise or organizing the meeting with the representative of a company. The main purpose of this work is to learn the process of energy usage on the enterprise and to find out the ways of its saving and maybe to give recommendations on it.

Eco-project for schools on the topic Energy and Energy saving has received the name Bright Sparks and included main activities on the project.

The Core Team of the Environmental Education direction is working under the tasks in the framework of project and on the realization of the Bright Sparks project in particular.

Information on the project "Bright Sparks"

Aim of the project:

To rise environmental awareness of children through practical project running and putting elements of the environmental education into the curriculum.

Participants:

Schools, youth organizations, Palaces of creativity of Donetsk. Age of participants - 8-12 years.

Challenges of the project:

• Putting elements of the EE in the curriculum;
• Carrying out Energy Audit;
• Involving parents in the work under the project;
• Presenting results of the Audit to the wider audience;
• Establishing links with businesses;
• Taking part in the big event on the level of city.
• And also challenges that you can suggest in the frame work of project.

How to enter:

If you and your organization is interested to take part in this project, then you should appoint person responsible for the carrying out the project in your organization, fill out application form and send it to the office of "Rosa Vetrov". Then these representatives of the organizations, responsible for running the project will participate in the training, where they will get the packet of materials and also will learn new techniques, which they can use when the project is carried out.

Dates of the project:

• Applying for the project - till the end of January
• Conducting the training for the representatives of the organizations - February
• Beginning of the project - end of February
• Judgement - May
• Big event on the level of city and awarding the winners - beginning of June

All participants will get Diploma certifying their taking part in the project and the work of winners will be presented on the Europe Conference of Ministries of Environment in Kiev, 2003.

3 most active schools will get prises for improving their assets. And beside that

1st place - trip to Kiev for working team for two days.
2nd place - books about environment.
3rd place - furry toys.
Teachers responsible for running the project in their organization will get 500, 350 and 250 UAH accordingly.
And also many small prises for active participants of the project.

Judging and awarding the winners will take place in May, 2001.
